intestinal. Objetivo: Discutir e entender a relação entre dieta vegetariana e a
microbiota intestinal.
Scielo, PubMed, entre outras, utilizando-se os descritores “dieta vegetariana;
diabetes, doenças inflamatórias intestinais e câncer, a dieta vegetariana mostrou
efeitos positivos, embora as evidências ainda careçam de consenso. Aspectos
Introduction: The complex relationship between the vegetarian diet, intestinal microbiota and health, from the perspective of the influence of diet on the composition and function of the intestinal microbiota. Objective: Discuss and understand the relationship between a vegetarian diet and the intestinal microbiota. Method: This is a narrative review study in which a broad analysis of the literature was addressed. The literature data collection was carried out over the last 5 years (2019-2023), in the databases Lilacs, Scielo, PubMed, among others, using the descriptors “vegetarian diet; intestinal microbiota; diet; dysbiosis”, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Results: The promotion of a diverse and potentially beneficial microbiota by the vegetarian diet was observed, but the analysis of the research consulted revealed nonuniform results, highlighting the need for more comprehensive and standardized studies. The concept of dysbiosis was considered, indicating imbalances in the microbiota that can affect gastrointestinal health. In conditions of cardiometabolism, diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases and cancer, the vegetarian diet has shown positive effects, although the evidence still lacks consensus. Psychological, social and economic aspects were also considered in the analysis of the quality of life associated with vegetarianism. Final Considerations: in summary, this work highlights the complexity of relationships and highlights the ongoing need for research to better understand and support nutritional interventions and public health policies.
