Although Vale do Ribeira is a region rich in biodiversity, its socioeconomic indexes are the lowest in the State of São Paulo. In the area, there is only one faculty with face-to-face course in the health field, which runs in the evening. This project aimed to understand the possible influence of socioeconomic aspects and previous education in high school with the permanence in higher education with students enrolled in the courses of the health area in a private higher education institution located in Vale do Ribeira. Specific goals: to characterize the socioeconomic profile of students enrolled in health field; explore aspects of their previous education in high school and their relation to the permanence in higher education; also knowledge and understanding the difficult aspects for students to remain in higher education. Method: the research was exploratory, descriptive, transversal study with a qualitative approach. The socioeconomic questionnaire and the semistructured interview were used as instruments, and the data collections were performed after the free informed consent was accepted. The results found evidenced the difficulties faced in higher education due to the low quality of secondary education and the low socioeconomic income, but these factors were not relevant to the dropout of the course. The motivation factor was the most reported for the permanence of the students to stay in higher education. The information obtained in the study brought indicators to propose strategies that can improve the reception and enhance the permanence of the learners and the completion of the graduation course.
