The increasing pollution by plastics in marine and aquatic environments makes it necessary to search for alternatives that reduce the use of polymeric materials, in this context, the development of blends of polyethylene with starch thermoplastic is shown as a possible route to reduce the use of non-polluting polymers biodegradable. The present work aimed to evaluate the influence of starch on the properties of blends with polyethylene, as well as to present an overview of the favorable and unfavorable points of the development of these materials through a literature review. Data collection was based on a search for key terms in the chosen Web of Science database for the terms “LDPE starch blends”, “LLDPE starch blends” and “HDPE starch blends”, using as selection criteria the most recent and most cited. The works obtained underwent critical reading and data analysis by SWOT matrix. Through the literature review, it was possible to evaluate the influence of factors such as starch source, polyethylene density and use of compatibilizer on the final properties of the blend. For all the cases studied, a polymeric blend was obtained with properties inferior to those of pure polyethylene, and a smaller number of intended applications. However, modifying the factors mentioned above can help to develop blends with better properties that replace pure polyethylene in certain application niches, such as film production and food packaging. Finally, some favorable and unfavorable factors for the development of blends were identified, resulting in favorable factors for the growth of research aimed at improving the properties of starch thermoplastic and compatibilizers, as unfavorable factors are the knowledge gap due to the lack of research that explore the properties of blends in greater depth.
