mundo.
This article aims to analyze how the Reconquista, in Portugal, became part of the Crusade Movement, from the 12th century onwards, inspired by the military ideals of the Middle Eastern crusades. In this context, the sacralization of the land, obtained mainly through papal bulls that encouraged military conflicts in Iberian territories, legitimized the doctrine of the Holy War against al-Andalus, and, thus, the Iberian Peninsula was transformed, by analogy, into a new Holly Land. The culture of the domestic crusade shaped royal and ecclesiastical discourses within the Iberian Peninsula, creating an imaginary of crusade that was widespread throughout medieval chronicles. These chronicles demonstrate that the projection of the Crusade Movement in the Iberian Peninsula contributed significantly to Iberian Christians understanding a new way of thinking and positioning themselves in the world.
