In the novel As Naus by António Lobo Antunes, he narrates the resurgence of the great figure of the Portuguese history, who returned from the 15th and 16th centuries to the 20th century, after the 25 April Revolution that culminated in the Independence of African countries, putting na end to portuguese colonization in that coutry. In this way, the characters that were monumentalized in history: Pedro Álvares Cabral, Luís de Camões, Diogo Cão, Vasco da Gama and Francisco Xavier, no longer return with the image of those glorious and corageous characters who braved the seas, but true failures. They assume, therefore, a threatening character to the presente, as if They were phantasms disturbing the memory. Thus, this work aims to show how these monumentalized characters became demonumentalized within the novel by António Lobo Antunes.
