First described in 1974, the burnout syndrome is an increasingly common phenomenon in the job market. It is characterized as a response to chronic interpersonal stressors present in the individual's routine, especially at work. It mainly affects health and education professionals. Its consequences can generate, in addition to severe emotional exhaustion, various psychological, physical and metabolic problems. The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of burnout in the studied sample, as well as to establish associations with sociodemographic, job satisfaction and organizational factors. The research developed was conducted digitally, including the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), the Teacher Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (TJSQ) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. 397 basic education teachers from different Brazilian states, from public and private schools, participated in the study. The prevalence of burnout found was 32.75%, with personal burnout being the most affected dimension, with a prevalence of 55.92%. Men and women showed equal prevalence in all burnout syndrome dimensions assessed with the CBI. However, when correlating the presence of burnout with the TJSQ factors, it is possible to notice that satisfaction has an antagonistic effect between the two genders. Men are less likely to have burnout when they are more satisfied with their work, while increased satisfaction generates greater chances of burnout in women. In view of the observed results, it can be concluded that more studies are needed so that it is possible to evaluate and develop measures to mitigate the stressors that can trigger the burnout syndrome, in order to ensure mental health and dignity of work for education professionals.
