Between 1899 and 1956, the exclusivity of the Canadian company The São Paulo Railway, Light and Power Company Limited in the production and supply of electricity to the city of São Paulo originated a significant architectural complex aimed at transmitting electricity to supply homes, factory sets, public transport and street lighting. The expansion of the electricity supply in the city allowed a vertiginous urban and population growth, creating conditions for the structuring and enlargement of the São Paulo industrial complex, from the modernization of factories and expansion of opening hours, beyond the intensification of several night activities, intensely changing the forms of urban sociability. Among the remaining buildings related to Cia Light's operations in the city of São Paulo, we highlight the so-called power substations: small, medium and large buildings designed to house electrical energy generating and transmitting equipment. A significant part of this architectural ensemble survived the changes that took place in the city over time. Among the remaining buildings, there are those that shelter activities linked to private companies in the energy sector, sometimes maintaining the same function for which they were conceived almost a century ago, there are those that underwent restoration and adaptation processes for new uses, and others that are closed waiting for a new role. In this context, the present research aimed to identify and analyze the remaining substations, considering their historical importance in the configuration of the territory and in the transformation of urban dynamics, as well as their architectural values and the circumstances of permanence in the city today. By gathering and analyzing the textual and iconographic documentation related to substations, existing in the collection of Energy and Sanitation Foundation, in the cities of São Paulo and Jundiaí, we identified the substations that were built in the period under study, those that still exist and in what situation meet. The research purpose is to understand its formal characteristics, transformations, permanence and uses of São Paulo substations, as well as its relationship with the surrounding urban context. In this process, we seek to discuss possibilities for the preservation of this complex as a built heritage of the capital of São Paulo.
