The effluents constantly released into the sea do not receive an appropriate treatment to completely remove the chemical components from the FPCPs, meaning that these residues with active pharmacological potential can still have implications for marine life. When released into the environment, these compounds tend to interact and accumulate in the sediment, which start to function as a repository and source of contamination for benthic and pelagic organisms. This interaction with the sediment transforms these contaminants through chemical processes and creates by-products that are more reactive, which can increase their bioavailability. Orphenadrine is the active compound of several drugs widely used in the world. In Brazil, some of these drugs are free of medical prescription and are used at high levels by the population. Due to the lack of success of traditional treatments for the complete removal of these compounds in effluents, these drugs can be found in the sea, close to urban areas and there are studies that demonstrate a higher concentration of orphenadrine in the environment in the water matrix compared to the sediment matrix. Therefore, the study evaluated the effects of orphenadrine on the embryolarval development of hedgehogs in the sediment. It was possible to observe the drug's direct effect on development and although the concentration used in the study was lower than the environmental one, the study suggests more research with different exposure times and different organisms.
