During the 1990s and 2000s, a valorization of the images as a source of historical knowledge has happened, bearing in mind the emergence of the “visual turns” and the field called Visual Culture, these objects, in their most varied forms, became an interest to social scientists given its potential as a visual source about the past. This thesis quests to understand how Brazilian historians have been using visual images as a source in their research. Therefore, the objective is to understand how this historiographic practice was consolidated, how the visual image was used as a historical source and what are the main characteristics of this historiography. For this purpose, we have organized an extensive database organizing schedules with the dissertations of six Brazilian Postgraduate Programs in History that used images as a historical source and that were defended between 2007 and 2017. Thus, we could conclude that the images are used mainly in researches that refer to the 20th century, in Brazil and the most analyzed imagetic objects were the audiovisual and photographic ones. Visual images allowed an expansion of the research themes and the understanding of cultural and social aspects through visuality. From the database, we also elaborated the tracking of an intellectual network that enabled the consolidation of this historiographical practice. So, overall, we seek to contribute to the understanding of the dynamics and characteristics of Brazilian historiography.
