Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that mainly affects the lungs and the central nervous system. The infection occurs through the inhalation of a spore of the fungus or desiccated yeast that, upon reaching the lung can spread throughout the body, mainly to the CNS by which it has tropism. Cryptococcosis is a disease caused by two species: C. neoformans and C. gattii. The fungus C. neoformans is commonly reported in people with HIV-AIDS or with immunodepression, whereas the disease by C. gattii affects mainly immunocompetent people. Studies show that the main environmental source of C. neoformans is a bird droppings like pigeons, chickens and turkeys, while C. gattii is found in some species of trees. Cryptococcosis is a disease that occurs globally and has high mortality rates. African continent is the region where the highest death rate occurs because there is a high prevalence of HIV in the population. The present work has a goal, to gather the main points of the disease and its etiological agents, through a bibliographic review in the scientific base PubMed, such the causes of the disease, symptoms, epidemiology and treatment of the disease, as well as other data relevant to this opportunistic fungal disease.
