This research has as objective the study of portraits of artists in the studio, of painters and sculptors working throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries in Brazil, performed by their contemporaries. In these portraits, artists are represented by their peers in ateliers, elegantly posing or individually in the midst of the craft and also collectively, alongside other artists or friends. We seek to understand how the modality of the artist's portrait in the studio denotes the importance and affirmation of his figure as a painter or sculptor, as well as the legitimation of his social position as an artist, through the recognition of his craft. We take into account the visual models and international genres and the current studies on the subject of the studio and also the question of the self-portrait, above all, as a point of analysis and comparison between the works, also identifying the differences and similarities in the image made by itself and by another artist. We also address the issue of literature and the presence of artists and their workshops in the novels of the nineteenth century, in order to investigate how these subjects were narrated in the pages read by society at the time. We recover the bibliographical discussion about the representation of the artist and the studio, as well as the art criticism of the period in newspapers or magazines of the time. We verified whether the portraits studied were exhibited at the General Fine Arts Exhibitions or in individual exhibitions and investigated the possible relationships between these portraits and photography, since many artists were in favor of the technique of capturing images in the production of their works and some of these were registered in their workshops through the technique. In addition, we also analyze the sociocultural conditions of the studios portrayed in order to understand and expand the artistic issues that existed in the period, the social relations maintained between the artists (portrayed and portrayed) and the academic institution, as well as their places of work in Rio de Janeiro and abroad.
