When the animal feeds infrequently, the postprandial period (after feeding) is characterized by an immediate and intense modification of the gastrointestinal system, with an increase in the aerobic metabolic rate, in the production and secretion of acid into the stomach and on the activity of intestinal membrane transporters for nutrient absorption. Assuming that the source of energy required for such events is, at least in its initial phase, only the body energetic reserves, the goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that longer fasting periods will result in lower metabolic increase during the postprandial period, because less energy reserves will be available for sustaining the metabolic increment. To investigate this, measurements of the oxygen consumption rate (VO2) of turtles Trachemys scripta elegans were taken at the end of two periods of fasting (1.5 and 3 months), before and after the ingestion of the equivalent of 5% of their body masses in food. Briefly, there was no difference between the maximum VO2 values after food intake (VO2 peak), between the postprandial metabolic scope and between the mean time to reach VO2 peak of the two experimental groups. This result may be an indication that part of the postprandial metabolism may be maintained by the energy from the food given to the animals or that even the most extensive fasting was not sufficient to limit the postprandial metabolic increase of the turtles.
