Karate is an ancient martial art, currently classified as an Olympic combat sport. This study aimed to understand and evaluate the determinants of karate practitioners' food choices, seeking to identify the factors that guide decision-making and how this sport influences this public's food choices. This was a cross-sectional study, of a qualitative and quantitative nature, which was carried out by applying the validated Brazilian version scale of the “Food Choice Questionnaire” and open questions about nutritional strategies in competition and food representations, through procedures applied virtually. Participants: 40 athletes, 50% women, with an average age of 21.1 (3.0), with more than 2 years in karate, present in the Brazilian ranking, training an average of 23.1 hours (3.0) / per day week. As a result, it was identified that the most important factors for karate practitioners in making decisions about their food choices are health, admission and price, with no difference in the importance of factors between men and women. There was a gap between health and age, and between ethical concern and training hours. Sport influences the nutritional strategies chosen for the pre-competitive period of the athletes, with a reduction in the consumption of food quantity, dehydration strategies and a small portion using gradual nutritional strategies, mainly through a balanced diet, that there is a quantity and quality of carbohydrates in the meals. With regard to the adequate level of hydration, most stated that they do not find this task difficult, as they always carry their water bottles with them and maintain good hydration on a daily basis. As for the meanings and representations of foods, those who said yes indicated modifying the consumption of some foods because they feel that they improve their performance. After the competition, both in victory and defeat situations, foods that bring pleasure are chosen, which represent a reward or comfort. Therefore, it was verified that there is a complexity and conversion of the food choice process of karatekas and the determinants of their food choices are broad and vary according to the variable or aspect analyzed.
