This study discusses the challenges encountered in the coverage of breast cancer screening in Brazil. Breast cancer screening with mammography is an important strategy for early detection of the disease. Using data collected from the Cancer Information System (SISCAN), significant differences were observed in the number of mammograms carried out between Brazilian regions and between levels of education, which may be determining factors for adherence to the examination, as well as the collection period analyzed. In addition, the way in which the data is collected may also have an impact on the figures provided. Raising awareness among the population about the importance of mammography and training health professionals are fundamental to increasing coverage. It is therefore necessary to invest in awareness-raising strategies and in a health care network that is prepared to welcome women with suspicious signs and symptoms, ensuring that confirmed cases are properly investigated and treated.
