Since the first half of the 20th century, studies have been carried out that investigate the frequency of emotional and behavioral problems in children and, later, in adolescents. The lack of standardization of the instruments used in such research was configured as a limit to the internal and external validity of the findings. The Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) includes standardized instruments used worldwide to assess behavior problems in different age groups, with the Youth Self Report (YSR) specifically for self-assessment of adolescents. The objective of this study was to analyze internalizing behaviors, externalizing behaviors and competences of Brazilian adolescents from a database of ASEBA instruments and to verify the effect of gender and age on their occurrence. A total of 9,295 protocols of this instrument were analyzed, answered by adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years (mostly girls residing in the Southeast region) between the years 2004 and 2020.. The results related to internalizing problems indicated a decrease in Anxiety/Depression with each year of age and, on the contrary, an increase in Isolation/Depression with each year of life, with no significant difference between genders. Among the externalizing factors, older adolescents were more likely to violate rules, with a significant difference between genders, with prevalence among males. For the total number of problems, boys had higher rates. Regarding the competences of adolescents, girls had higher rates, however, with advancing age, the average competence among adolescents showed a decreasing character. This information contributes to the understanding of mental health in Brazilian adolescents and helps in the development of prevention and intervention strategies, in addition to enabling comparisons with populations from other countries, which were also evaluated using ASEBA instruments.
