The research conducted articulates tradition and contradictions, in the past and present, of Brazilian society, to discuss the permanence of conservatism in a context of crisis of global capitalism - especially since 2008 that there has been a neoliberal and authoritarian counter-attack in Latin America since a decade of rising progressive forces. It is based on the hypothesis that redemocratization in Brazil has reached the institutional procedures, but has not renewed political practices, because there is tension in the capital versus labor relation, from the perspective of peripheral and dependent capitalism, mobilizing historical reactionary sectors against democratic and popular forces. Thus, in a dialectic, historical and structural perspective, the study in question seeks to analyze the relationship between authoritarianism and democracy in Brazil, highlighting the contradictions between capital x labor through the "social question", considering our "social formation" and the typical "mode of production" that structures society. To this end, authors of Brazilian political and social thought were mobilized, considering their different methodological and theoretical approaches. Finally, we highlight the "conservative modernization", the "authoritarian tradition", the "manorial order", the "bourgeois autocracy" and the "dependent capitalism" as fundamental elements that characterize the historical process and that impact on the economic, social and democratic development in Brazil
