The market share of brazilian industry in the field of medical technology, has been decreasing in this century and, today, more than a half of the consumed value is imported. Adding the fact that the production concentrates on less technological and cheaper material, the actual scenery is of technological dependence and vulnerability, as the trade balance gets to a 10 billion dollars deficit. In response to this scenario, one of the Health Ministry’s priorities is to educate specialized professionals, which was materialized in the creation and expansion of Biomedical Engineering colleges, providing the market and stimulating entrepreneurship on the field. Considering this scenary, this work aims to understand the factors that contribute to the success of a company. This was made by analyzing successful brazilian companies from the field, assessing their common characteristics. Eight companies participated, all consolidated with sufficient size and comparable revenue to be considered successful. The sample was well evaluated on two thirds critical success factors found in the literature. They stood out especially in partners and managers related factors, in the high degree of utilization of success indicators, focusing on cost control, profit and client satisfaction, besides being attentive to employee attraction and retention and to meet market demands. The high relevance attributed to the factors related to the companies’ internal characteristics indicates that there’s a path to overcome the challenging scenario. The extent of the interpretations was limited by the short sample.
