With the global increase of scientific publications about this topic it would be expected a lot of articles written with focus on the use of opioid drugs in Latin America. Objective: Develop a scope review to map and analyze publications about the use of opioids on Latin American countries. Methods: A search was carried out in the Databases Medline (through Pubmed), Embase and Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS) with topics related to the subject. No restrictions related to native language or year of publication were applied during search. Two independent reviewers identified the eligible publications and a third reviewer assessed the disagreements. Only the publications related to use, consumption or access to opioids on any Latin American country written in english, portuguese or spanish were considered. Animal and in vitro studies were excluded, as well as cohort studies, observational studies, regression analysis, prevalence studies and meta-analysis. Posteriorly the main information of each publication were extracted (title, year of publishment, country of interest, main subject and type of publication) and used for classifify and analyse them. Results: After the evaluation of the 2,365 found publications and the inclusion of 10 publications manually, a total of 42 was considered in this review. The main type of publication was “other publications without data analysis”, which included editorials, experience reports, consensus of health professionals, opinion articles, guidelines and narrative reviews. The five main identified subjects were: consumption, prescription, perception, access and Adverse Events. Discussion and conclusion: Despite the huge amount of publication related to the use of opioids globally, only a few studies were identified when related to Latin America. Besides that, more than half (22) of the relevant identified publications didn’t involve data analysis, which shows that the subject is being widely discussed but still little studied.
