Essa pesquisa pretende oferecer uma análise detalhada da revista Illustração do Brazil,
de Charles Vivaldi. Essa publicação foi idealizada como um instrumento portador dos mais altos valores para a época. Seu objetivo principal era, além de informar, educar a população e aproximá-la das mais elevadas expressões do conhecimento já produzidas pelo homem. Em suas páginas constam textos sobre a considerada evolução humana, biografias de artistas, a publicação de livros originais em capítulos, traduções de livros estrangeiros, comentários sobre as obras de escritores brasileiros da época, e artigos sobre a história mundial. Suas ilustrações merecem destaque especial,
impressas com uma nitidez admirável; - elas mostram cenas
urbanas de cidades europeias, americanas e orientais; retratos de grandes personalidades e, principalmente, reproduções de obras de arte, sejam elas quadros, esculturas ou fotografias, dos clássicos quadros de Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) e trabalhos de Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) a obras de contemporâneos como Daniele Bucciarelli (1839–1911). Para compreender a essência dessa publicação, o trabalho será dividido em três capítulos. O primeiro reunirá um compilado de informações sobre a imprensa e sua atuação em Portugal e no Brasil, além de resgatar algumas das publicações ilustradas que circularam no Brasil. O segundo capítulo analisará a revista Illustração do Brazil e seu conteúdo, começando com algumas informações sobre o dono da revista, seus colaboradores e o tipo de texto publicado. O último capítulo será dedicado a estudar algumas das ilustrações publicadas. Muitos desenhos foram comprados do exterior, e essa parte da pesquisa investigará como a Revista tentava conectar ilustrações estrangeiras à realidade local, e também quais valores eles tentavam expressar através das reproduções escolhidas para cada edição.
This research goal is offer a detailed analysis of Charles Vivaldi's Illustration do Brazil magazine. This publication was idealized as an instrument with the highest values for the time, its main objective was, in addition to informing, educating the population and bringing them closer to the highest expressions of knowledge ever produced by men. Its pages contain texts on human evolution, artist biographies, the publication of original books in chapters, translations of foreign books, comments on the works of Brazilian writers at the time, and articles on world history. His illustrations deserve special mention, printed with admirable clarity; - they show us urban scenes of European, American and Eastern cities; portraits of great personalities and, mainly, reproductions of works of art, be they paintings, sculptures or photographs, from the classic paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) and works by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) to works by contemporaries such as Daniele Bucciarelli (1839–1911). To understand the essence of this publication, the work will be divided into three chapters. The first will gather a compilation of information about the press and its activities in Portugal and Brazil, in addition to retrieving some of the illustrated publications that circulated in Brazil. The second chapter will analyze the magazine Illustration do Brazil and its content, starting with some information about the magazine's owner, its collaborators and the type of text published. The last chapter will be dedicated to studying some of the published illustrations. Many drawings were purchased from abroad, and this part of the research will investigate how the Magazine tried to connect foreign illustrations to the local reality, and also what values they tried to express through the reproductions chosen for each edition.
