Since the end of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, some visual arts and literature critics have pointed out certain intersections between the production of visual artist José Leonilson and literature field. In this context, we intend to demonstrate how his works can be read with what has been called by contemporary Latin American literary criticism as Expanded Literature, Literatura Fora de Si (Literature OutsideItself), or even Post-Autonomous Literature. In order to do so, we will point out how such conceptions of literature both dialogue with each other and evidence what we have called epistolary writing practices, citational writing practices, writing gesture practices and autofictional writing practices in the visual production of Leonilson. In this way, we point out some ways in which the visual artist explores the epistolary form, makes use of quotations, investigates the materialities of words, destabilizes literary genres, or even subverts the conventional supports of literature, which, in the limit, calls for expansion of our understandings of literature. In this perspective, we also aimed to contribute to the re-signification of the critical reception of Leonilson's production, by trying to enforce the artist's desire to know how to put words together, to make sentences, or even to form a book.
