Os bruquíneos, insetos pertencentes à ordem Coleoptera, são conhecidos por serem importantes predadores de sementes. Geralmente consomem o embrião, levando a semente à morte. No entanto, há casos em que a germinação é favorecida ou mesmo indiferente quando as sementes são infestadas por bruquíneos. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a proporção de trabalhos publicados que constataram, respectivamente, efeitos positivos, negativos e neutros na germinação de sementes quando infestadas por bruquíneos, testando a hipótese de que a maioria dos estudos encontrou que a eficiência na germinação é negativamente afetada. Também foi comparada a magnitude das porcentagens de germinação nas sementes intactas e atacadas por bruquíneos. Por fim, a hipótese de que existe uma relação inversa entre a porcentagem de germinação e o tamanho dos bruquíneos foi testada. Foi observado que a maioria das publicações mostrou efeitos negativos da predação de sementes. Quando os efeitos foram positivos, a porcentagem de germinação foi menos intensa do que nas sementes intactas. Relações inversas entre a razão tamanho das sementes/tamanho dos bruquíneos e o tamanho dos bruquíneos, bem como a porcentagem de germinação e o tamanho dos bruquíneos, foram encontradas, sugerindo que a probabilidade dos bruquíneos atingirem o embrião e/ou reduzirem a quantidade de reserva energética disponível para a germinação é maior quando maiores.
Bruchinae beetles, insects from the Coleoptera order, are known as important seed feeders. They usually consume the embryo, killing the seeds in most cases. However, in some cases seed germination is favored or even indifferent when seeds are infested by bruchines. The aim of this study was to investigate the proportion of published articles that showed positive, negative and neutral effects, on seed germination after being infested by bruchines, testing the hypothesis that most studies observed that the efficiency of seed germination is negatively affected. The magnitude of percentages of germination on intact and infested seeds was also compared. Finally, the hypothesis that there is an inverse relationship between the percentage of germination and the size of bruchines was tested. It was observed that most publications showed negative effects of seed predation on germination. When the effects were positive, the percentage of seed germination was less intense than the intact seeds. Inverse relationships between the ratio seed size/bruchine size and bruchine size, as well as the percentage of germination and bruchine size, were found, suggesting that the probability of bruchines reach the seed embryo and/or reduce the amount of energy reserve for germination is higher when the bruchines are bigger.
