If the problem of Aby Warburg (1866-1929) centered on the question "what does the influence of the ancients mean for the artistic civilization of the first Renaissance?" (WARBURG, 2013: 461), the topic of the orientation of man through the cosmos permeated his intellectual investigation at a constant pace. Asking about the formation of modern man, freed from medieval servility by rationality (Per monstra ad sphaeram), Warburg (2013: 475) investigates the migratory paths of the astrological and mythological imaginary to the Italian peninsula, defending the “methodological expansion of the borders of our art science in thematic and spatial terms ”. In an interdisciplinary key that considers the link between art and its historical-cultural context, he attributes a sense of complementarity to pictorial and literary documents, overcoming a formalist aesthetic approach to art. To contribute to the debate on Warburg's proposal (2013: 475) for a 'science of culture' (Kulturwissenschaftiche), we seek to understand the methodological role of astrological images in their studies, identifying their products related to the theme, the means of research and related studies that he made use of, as well as the historiographical production related to his intellectual work. We deepened in his studies on the Palazzo Schifanoia, which for Warburg (2013: 454) would demonstrate the double ancient tradition (mythological and astrological) in a circulation of iconologies that breaks with the East x West barriers. Affirming that the “renovation of pagan antiquity in the Renaissance” would have inherited astrological conceptions from Greek mythology, intermediated by Indian and Arab demonology, Warburg expands the notion of 'Renaissance' and the very idea of 'Ancient'.
