The objectives of this study are to understand the meaning of the use and non-use of alcohol for undergraduate students of nursing in the Forest Campus of Federal University of Acre (UFAC) and know the protective factors for the low-risk alcohol consumption for the same. This qualitative research was developed with the use of oral history in thematic and methodological strategy in which interviews with semi - structured script were used as a technique for obtaining data. The research involved 12 students regularly enrolled in the course of a Bachelor?s Degree in Nursing from the Forest Campus of UFAC, in which nine are female with average of 24 years, five are married and 11 were born in Cruzeiro do Sul city (Acre-Brasil). The study was performed after approval from the Ethics Committee in Research with Human Beings of the Federal University of Sao Paulo (Brasil) from opinion no. 569.355. The analysis of the narratives from the issues that generate "what is the meaning of the alcohol to the population? ", "what is the meaning of alcohol to you?" and "what do you do that the nursing undergraduate students use or do not use the alcohol?" so these issues afforded the construction of three major theme: 1- Protection factors and risk for the alcohol consumption, 2- Consequences of alcohol consumption, 3- Representations of/for the alcohol consumption. As regards the protection or risk for the alcohol consumption by students, seven factors were mentioned frequently in the narratives: family, religion, financial resource, university life, expectation of a better life, technical-scientific knowledge and regionality. On the consequences of the alcohol consumption the students speak of feelings, behaviors and signs symptoms by alcohol consuming, so that the actions of alcohol may be physiological, recreational and social. In relation to the third topic, for some students, the alcohol is synonymous with fun, relaxation, socialization, but can also be related to escape from the problems. From the point of view was an observational study, the students do not use alcohol, however establish with this an indirect relation by means of their peers, in this case parents and friends, extra university. The personal dedication and collective of students for the continuity of regular course is clear so that among all protection factors referred to what had meaning more expressive was the life of the university. In this sense, it is clear that the important role of the university in the local community, especially for the students of the undergraduate nursing course. However, we cannot generalize the results of this study to all undergraduate courses in the Forest Campus of UFAC, therefore if it is necessary to investigate this scenario university using quantitative and qualitative approaches with the materials and specific methods, such as the use and non-use in the university context.
