Young people with problems associated with psychotropic drugs use are often reluctant to seek advice, and their parents do not know how to handle such situations. Faced with this demand, we developed a counseling program aimed at parents of young psychotropic substance abusers. The objectives of this study were: to assess the degree of compliance and satisfaction of parents with the orientation program; to evaluate the influence of the kind of intervention offered (individual or group) as well as of its frequency (eight sessions or a single intervention) on family functioning; to investigate whether there were changes in family functioning after a period of eight weeks. Participants were 140 parents or guardians of young people (12-25 y.o.) who, according to their parents, were abusive users of psychotropic substances. The parents were randomly assigned to a control group (CON), which participated in a single intervention (N = 48), to a group (IND) which participated in an intervention with eight weekly individual sessions (N = 42) or to a group (GRU) which participated in an intervention with eight weekly group sessions (N =50). We also included a negative control group (CONEG), composed of 23 parents or guardians of young people who, according to their parents or guardians, were not psychotropic substances users. For the assessment of family functioning, the instrument FES (Family Environment Scale - FES) was applied to all participants before the first intervention session and eight weeks thereafter. Adherence to the program was high: IND -80,9% and GRU - 78,5%. Improvement was observed in family functioning after this period, especially in the FES areas of cohesion, expressiveness, conflict, independence, intellectual interests, leisure, organization and control. In general, parents who received the intervention of eight sessions (in group or individual) showed improvement in family functioning similar to that of parents who received only a single-session intervention. These data suggest that a single counseling session can help to improve family functioning. In the negative control group, which received no intervention, there were no significant changes in the FES scores after eight weeks. All participants reported high levels of satisfaction.
