In order to enable fast regeneration of the remnant liver techniques as previous embolization or portal vein ligature, two-stage hepatectomy and the ALPPS have been used, yet the insufficient hepatic mass continues to be a challenge. The cell therapy has been speculated as a promising therapeutic arsenal to accelerate or improve the hepatic regeneration after extended resections. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the mesenchymal stem cells on the hepatic regeneration in rats submitted under 70% hepatectomy. Methods: in fourty Winstar rats submitted under 70% hepatectomy it was infused 106 of mesenchymal stem cells (trial group) or saline solution (control group) through portal vein. These groups were divided in early and late subgroups (euthanasia on the third and fifth post operative day, respectively). Outcomes of the hepatic regeneration tax, albumin variation, TGO, TGP and FA, cell proliferation index (ki-67) and the number of mitosis were compared. Results: Significant outcomes in the hepatic regeneration tax, number of mitosis and cell proliferation index were not observed. Likewise there was no difference of albumin levels variation, TGO and FA. It was found significant variation in the levels of TGP, higher in the trial group. Conclusions: It was not observed improvement of the hepatic regeneration tax on the third and fifth post hepatectomy day among rats that received cellular therapy. There was also no improvement of hepatic function, of cell proliferation index and of the number of mitosis in the groups that were submitted under the mesenchymal stem cells infusion.
