- ItemSomente MetadadadosFirst report of Candida auris in America: Clinical and microbiological aspects of 18 episodes of candidemia(W B Saunders Co Ltd, 2016) Calvo, Belinda; Melo, Analy Salles de Azevedo [UNIFESP]; Perozo-Mena, Armindo; Hernandez, Martin; Francisco, Elaine Cristina [UNIFESP]; Hagen, Ferry; Meis, Jacques F.; Colombo, Arnaldo Lopes [UNIFESP]Objectives: Characterization of a hospital outbreak of Candida auris candidemia that involved 18 critically ill patients in Venezuela. Method: Bloodstream isolates of C. auris obtained from 18 patients admitted at a medical center in Maracaibo, between March, 2012 and July, 2013 were included. Species identification was confirmed by ITS rDNA sequencing. Isolates were subsequently typed by amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting (AFLP). Susceptibility testing was performed according to CLSI. Clinical data were collected from all cases by using a standard clinical form. Results: A total of 13 critically ill pediatric and 5 adult patients, with a median age of 26 days, were included. All were previously exposed to antibiotics and multiple invasive medical procedures. Clinical management included prompt catheter removal and antifungal therapy. Thirteen patients (72%) survived up to 30 days after onset of candidemia. AFLP fingerprinting of all C. auris isolates suggested a clonal outbreak. The isolates were considered resistant to azoles, but susceptible to anidulafungin and 50% of isolates exhibited amphotericin B MIC values of >1 mu g/ml. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that C. auris is a multiresistant yeast pathogen that can be a source of health-care associated infections in tertiary care hospitals with a high potential for nosocomial horizontal transmission. - ItemSomente MetadadadosGlycemic control and its correlates in patients with diabetes in Venezuela: Results from a nationwide survey(Elsevier B.V., 2010-03-01) Moreira, Edson Duarte; Silva Neves, Raimundo Celestino; Nunes, Zaira Onofre; Chagas de Almeida, Maria Conceicao; Valverde Mendes, Ana Beatriz [UNIFESP]; Saraiva Fittipaldi, Joao Antonio; Ablan, Franklin; Venezuelan Diabet; Brazilian Minist Hlth; Charitable Works Fdn Sister Dulce; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Pfizer Inc; Cent Univ VenezuelaAims: To determine the prevalence of inadequate glycemic control and its correlates in a large multicenter survey of Venezuelan patients with diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study in a sample of adult patients with diabetes, attending health centers in Venezuela. Information about diabetes, current medications, complications, and diet were obtained by trained interviewers, using a standardized questionnaire. HbA(1c) was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography in a central laboratory. Patients with HbA(1c) >= 7% were considered to have inadequate glycemic control. Results: Overall 4075 patients were surveyed, 349(8.6%) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and 3726(91.4%) with type 2 diabetes(T2D). Subjects' mean age was 58 years, and 65% were female. the prevalence of inadequate glycemic control was 76%. Poor glycemic control was more common in T1D patients (87%) than in those with T2D(75%), p < 10(-4). Satisfaction with current diabetes treatment was associated with improved glycemic control among non-insulin-treated patients with T2D, but gender, multi-professional care, and participation in a diabetes education program were not. Conclusions: Despite clinical evidence supporting tight control of diabetes, few diabetic patients in Venezuela met recommended glycemic control targets. This may contribute to increased rates of diabetic complications. Our findings support the public health message of implementation of early, aggressive management of diabetes. - ItemSomente MetadadadosMeasures for food and housing in comparative perspective: venezuela and brazil(Elsevier Science Bv, 2016) Mattioda, Henrique Saint'Clair [UNIFESP]; de Souza, Luciana Rosa [UNIFESP]Comparative studies on anti-poverty programs enrich the design and evaluation of these actions. Venezuela and Brazil are implementing good anti-poverty practices in Latin America. The objective of this paper is to analyze food and housing programs in both countries and to try to know which of these two designs have more potential to emancipate poverty. Regarding food programs 'Mision Mercal' (Mercal Mission) is been executed in Venezuela, which is compared with 'Bolsa Familia' (Family Bag) in Brazil. As for housing programs it studies 'Gran Mision Viviendas' (Great Housing Mission) in Venezuela, in contrast with 'Minha Casa, Minha Vida' (My house, my life) from Brazil. In the theoretical and methodological field, this paper uses the concepts of training, degrees and functionalities from Amartya Sen to compare these food and housing programs. The text is divided into three sections: the first deals with Sen's analytical categories the second historically contextualizes the social programs in both countries and the third part, analyzes and compares these food and housing programs. The study concludes that there are important differences between the programs that were carried in Venezuela and Brazil because evidence can be shown that the Bolivarian socialism promotes practices that encourage the transfer of products that generate income.
