The research is interested in understanding these cultural practices and their relation to the cultural function of school. As theoretical reference, we use Pierre Bourdieu‟s concept of cultural capital. The data was collected through a questionnaire answered by 19 teachers who work at the four schools in Guarulhos with the best IDEB performance in 2009. In these questionnaires, we attempted at collecting information about the teachers‟ family backgrounds, the family they belong and their access to cultural goods. The results reveal that the teachers did not have access to the socially privileged culture, despite the fact that they were born in big cities (São Paulo and Guarulhos), probably due to their social origins in these cities that have problems with social exclusion, and on families with little schooling, the question of cultural heritage is very influent in the constitution of the subjects‟ capital. Teachers present some fragilities regarding to access to legitimate culture, which may contribute to compromise school‟s cultural function.
