From the transcriptome of the caterpillar bristles, th,is molecule was cloned and obtained in recombinant form (rLopap). It has been previously shown that Lopap, as well as rLopap, promote cytoprotection in addition to increasing the expression of adhesion molecules involved in the inflammatory processo Multiple alignment analysis of primary sequences and structural motifs indicated a similarity of 20 to 59% with other proteins belonging to the lipocalin family, proving the presence ofthree characteristic structural motifs that define this family. Considering the second structural motif (motif 2), two peptides were designed and synthesized, P2 (7 residues) and P4 (11 residues). The P4 peptide was able to maintain the viability of endothelial cells induced to apoptosis by serum deprivation, in addition to promoting increased expression of extracellular matrix molecules, such as collagen and fibronectin, thus indicating a possible role in tissue remodeling. A common amino acid sequence between P2 and P4 peptides was suggested as a signature sequence of lipocalins, whose molecular .. ,properties were investigated with the application of molecular modeling, computational chemistry and chemometrics methods. From this in silico evaluation the rational development of new peptides was established. After experimental validation the peptides that presented the best cytoprotective activity were elected to investigate the mechanism of this action.
