    Análise clínica e epidemiológica dos pacientes avaliados pela interconsulta da neurologia no Hospital São Paulo

    Background: Medical consultation by a specialist physician consists of an evaluation to review diagnosis and management of inpatients receiving care in other specialty wards. This mode of care delivery has gained relevance in the field of neurology and adequate training is of great importance so that neurologists can provide quality care to patients with neurological manifestations. The present study aimed to characterize neurology consultations and to understand the roles of the neurologist within a hospital setting. Methods: The study was based on information from 223 in patients admitted to a university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, who were evaluated in neurological consultations. Results: There were evaluated 117 female and 106 male inpatients with a mean age of 53.8 ± 2.4 years. The medical specialties that most frequently requested neurological consultations were Internal Medicine (17%), Vascular Surgery (13.9%), Cardiology (11.2%) and Infectious Diseases (9.4%). The main reasons for consultation were seizures (15.7%); neurological examination (9.9%); depressed level of consciousness (9%) and muscle weakness (7.6%). The main neurological conditions diagnosed were preoperative neurological evaluation (11.2%), stroke (8.5%); hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (3.6%); and sepsis (3.1%). Conclusion: Our findings show the growing importance of the role of neurologists within hospital settings as many medical conditions present with neurological manifestations and the significance of the neurohospitalist model of care, which is now a key topic for discussion.
