The main empirical focus is on women who work in the periphery of São Paulo?s Eastern Zone. An ethnographic methodology was used to carry out this study. For about two years, we followed the practices and representations of women, narratives of family life drama, mostly focused on domestic violence - a theme which appeared forcefully in these narratives, though it was not the central focus of our study. We also placed the actions and reactions of women in historical perspective. The AMZOL study was strategic to establishing connections with the recent past. We understand that women's struggles in the periphery have specificities and are linked with the urban social movements of the 70s. We also noted later that in contemporary times problems of socio-spatial segregation, racism and economic inequality are tied to gender issues. The ethnographic study of two entities that act in support of women, Casa Viviane dos Santos and Casa Anastasia, revealed connections with the past struggles of the 70s, but also indicated that new themes and strategies are being defined. Racism, for example, appears as an important issue faced by the militants, beneficiaries and technicians of Casa Anastasia. Our results indicate that women from the periphery face unique issues. The condition of black women and the localities in which they live, marked by problems of urban segregation, racism, socioeconomic and gender inequalities, structure a specific framework, leading to particular reflections and experiences, which explain the alternatives and approaches of feminist practices in line with the experiences of poor and black women.
