It is affected in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the destruction of adjoining structures causes deformity and loss of function. The aim of this study was to translate to portuguese, perform cultural adaptation and test the reproducibility of a questionnaire of hand function, the Cochin Hand Functional Scale (CHFS), for Brazil. Methods: CHFS was translated to Portuguese and then to French. These translations were reviewed by a committee to establish the Brazilian version. Afterwards, the validity and reliability of CHFS were evaluated. Patients with RA were interwiewed, both man and woman, with involvement in hands and aged between 18 and 60 years. Patients were initially interviewed by two assessors, and later by only one evaluator. At the first assessment, it was applied Visual Analogic Scale (VAS) for pain, the DASH and the HAQ. Ninety (90) patients were evaluated. Results: Two questions were modified during the assessment of cultural equivalence. Cronbach alpha was 0.93. The intraclass correlation intra-observer and inter-observer was 0.96 and 0.76, respectively. The Spearman coefficient showed low correlation between CHFS and VAS for pain (0.46), and moderate correlation with the HAQ (0.66), DASH (0.63). On the average, the application time was 3 minutes. Conclusion: Brazilian version of the Cochin Hand Functional Scale was successfully obtained with good internal consistency, reliability and structure validity.
