The International Study Group on Melanonychia was founded in 2007 and currently has 30 members, including nail experts and dermatopathologists with special expertise in nails. The need for common definitions of nail plate dermoscopy was addressed during the Second Meeting of this Group held in February 2008. Prior to this meeting and to date (2010) there have been no evidence-based guidelines on the use of dermoscopy in the management of nail pigmentation.

It is a clinical entity of relevant interest and presents a significant psychosocial impact as it undermines self-esteem and quality of life in female patients due to the importance of the hair for people's facial balance. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study is to evaluate dermoscopic signs in women clinically diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia. METHOD: Observational study with 34 women between 17 and 68 years old who were diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia. All of them underwent photographic sessions with a 10x magnification dermoscope and a digital camera zoom set to 20x magnification and 40x magnification on the scalp frontal midline. RESULTS: All patients showed miniaturization. A peripilar brown halo was found in 22 patients, honeycomb-like scalp pigmentation was found in 14 and yellow dots in only 1 patient. Recent studies show dermoscopy as the new tool for diagnosis assistance and treatment follow up in scalp disorders. Our study used an ordinary dermoscope and we evaluated several findings reported in the literature with significant clarity and easiness. CONCLUSION: The dermoscope, which is used by dermatologists on a daily basis, is an excellent tool to assist in early diagnosis and assessment of therapeutic response in androgenetic alopecia.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Dermoscopy of Bowen's disease: pigmented variant on the penis(Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia, 2012-06-01) Ishioka, Priscila [UNIFESP]; Yamada, Sérgio [UNIFESP]; Michalany, Nilceo Schwery [UNIFESP]; Hirata, Sergio Henrique [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Pigmented Bowen's disease (PBD) is a variant of squamous cell carcinoma in situ and represents less than 2% of cases of Bowen's disease. It is characterized by a sharply demarcated, pigmented plaque with a scaly or crusted surface on intertriginous and genital areas. The authors describe a case of PBD on the penis and analyze the dermoscopic aspects of this type of lesion.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Granuloma faciale: a rare disease from a dermoscopy perspective(Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia, 2013-12-01) Teixeira, Danilo Augusto; Estrozi, Bruna; Ianhez, Mayra; Federal University of Goiás Department of Dermatology; Pathologist at the Pathology Consulting Service - Botucatu (SP); Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Federal University of GoiásThe granuloma faciale is a rare and benign skin disease of unknown etiology, characterized by chronic leukocitoclastic vasculitis. It is characterized by skin lesions predominantly facial whose course is chronic and slowly progressive. The diagnosis is based on clinical features, histopathology and, more recently, in dermoscopy. We describe the case of a male patient, 40 years old, with a sarcoid lesion on the malar site, whose histopathological examination revealed a mixed inflammatory infiltrate with presence of Grenz zone. Dermoscopy revealed a pink background with white striations. The definitive diagnosis is made by histopathologic evaluation, and dermatoscopy can be helpful. It is known to be resistant to therapy, oral medications, intralesional and surgical procedures are options.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Tungiasis under dermoscopy: in vivo and ex vivo examination of the cutaneous infestation due to Tunga penetrans(Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia, 2013-08-01) Criado, Paulo Ricardo; Landman, Gilles [UNIFESP]; Reis, Vitor Manoel Silva Dos; Belda Junior, Walter; Universidade de São Paulo (USP); Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP)The female flea Tunga penetrans is responsible for a cutaneous parasitosis known as Tungiasis. We report the clinical case of a 12 year-old Caucasian boy who sought treatment in a dermatological private office due to a painful lesion in the plantar area and whose dermoscopic examination, without skin contact, allowed the visualization of parasite's movement inside the skin. The diagnosis of tungiasis is clinical, but it can be aided by in vivo and ex vivo dermoscopic examination of the lesion.
