The significant increase in consumerism, coupled with technological advancements, has led to a substantial rise in the use of packaging across various industrial sectors, notably in the food industry. These packaging materials can include glass, cellulose, metal, and plastic, each possessing essential properties such as light, gas, aroma, and microorganism barriers. It is noteworthy that, presently, plastic is the material with the lowest recycling rate, and it is precisely this material that will be the focus of this review. One of the major drawbacks of the surge in consumerism is the substantial volume of waste generated, directly linked to environmental impacts. In this context, it becomes imperative to seek alternatives and appropriate management programs for post-consumer waste, such as recycling and packaging reuse, with the goal of reducing improper disposal and, consequently, the environmental consequences of such practices. Within this context, this thesis aims to conduct a literature review that examines the conditions of plastic recycling in Brazil while analyzing the social and economic impacts of the low recycling rate.
