This undergraduate thesis aims to unveil the origin and development of capoeira within the socio-historical formation of Brazil, highlighting it as a symbol of resistance and the anti-racist struggle. The study sought to elucidate the role of capoeira as a socio-historical and cultural heritage of the Afro-Brazilian people, analyzing its trajectory up to the present day and emphasizing its importance for the inclusion of the Black population in social life, as well as for the strengthening of Afro-Brazilian culture in the country. This process aims to transform the historical conditions imposed on the Black population, with capoeira representing an example of resistance, struggle, and social practice that seeks to build more just and dignified racial relations in Brazilian society. Motivated by the experience and critical observation of the researchers, combined with their studies in Social Work and debates on anti-racist education, this thesis seeks to position capoeira within the socio-historical formation of Brazil, understanding it as both a process and a product of this formation. The specific objectives include: analyzing the origin of capoeira in Colonial Brazil, exploring its resistance to slavery and its connections to quilombo resistance movements; understanding the decriminalization of capoeira during the Vargas government and its transformation into a sport; and examining the recognition of capoeira as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity and its relevance to the struggles of the Black population. The research, qualitative in nature and based on historicaldialectical materialism, employs both documentary and bibliographical research. The analysis seeks to answer how capoeira contributes to the preservation of Black history in Brazil and to what extent it represents Black resistance and anti-racist struggles. The conclusion reveals that capoeira, integrated into the unified Black movement, plays a crucial role in the fight against racism and social exclusion, while also being a cultural expression deeply intertwined with political issues and power relations. By promoting solidarity and collective resistance, capoeira establishes itself as a powerful way to keep the memory of historical struggles alive and reaffirm Black identity, while also being a cultural expression immersed in political issues and power relations.
