legumes e verduras (FLV) da feira livre da rua Rio Grande do Sul no bairro José
Menino e a área necessária para compostagem contínua desse material. As coletas
Composting is a great alternative for recycling organic waste, which is approximately 50% of urban solid waste generated in Brazilian municipalities. In this way, the present study aimed to analyze the generation of fruit and vegetable waste (FLV) from the street fair on Rio Grande do Sul street in the José Menino neighborhood and the area needed for continuous composting of this material. The samples were collected took place in a period of four weeks and 15 tents. The composting method used was the passive aeration static windrow (UFSC method) with temperature monitoring. As a carbon source for composting, leaf litter from the sweeping and pruning of the Orquidário de Santos was used. The sizing of the windrows was calculated according to the average of experimentally composted waste from the collections carried out. On average, 284.3kg of FLV/week were collected, 7.2kg from the juice stall, 76.2kg from the vegetable stalls, 56.6kg from vegetables, and 144.3kg from fruits. Temperature monitoring showed that the material was sanitized correctly. For the three-row system adopted, where one is being fed, another is resting and the third is maturing, the calculated dimensions are 3.1m x 1.6m x 1.2m (W x W x h) each. Thus, this work sought to help the Composta Santos Project, of composting and urban agriculture, to increase and make possible the segregation at the source of composting in a street fair in the city of Santos, promoting several environmental benefits, such as the reduction of organic waste that goes to the sanitary landfill and in the generation of organic compost
