The emergence of new business models and the advancement of information technology in the midst of the digital revolution that has marked the beginning of the twentieth first century have allowed the development of new economic structures based on the digital world. In this context, many platforms assume the character of mediators in multi-sided markets, linking consumers to service providers, developers, creators etc. Markets and platforms like these present a series of innovations and differentiations that make it challenging to analyze its industrial organization in the context of the competitive scenario that is being designed for this new model of economic structuring. This article seeks to revisit the microeconomic literature focused on the study of multi-sided platforms, to list their foundations, and to explore some of the potential difficulties for their analysis from the standpoint of the microeconomics traditionally used in the context of industrial organization and competitive economics.
