(Rutaceae) has been attracting interest due to its sedative and relaxing actions. In the present study, rats previously exposed to OEO at the concentrations of 1.0%; 2.5% and 5.0%, w/w, by inhalation during 7 minutes in acrylic boxes were evaluated in two anxiety models: elevated plus maze (EPM) and open-field. The OEO at the concentration of 2.5% increased both the time of the animals in the open arms of the EPM and the time of active social interaction in the open-field being longer than that of the diazepam group (1.5 mg/kg i.p). In conclusion, the decrease in the level of emotionality of the animals observed in the two experimental models suggests a possible central action, which is in agreement with the phytochemical profile of the oil under study, since it showed the presence of limonene (96.24%) and mircene (2.24%), components with a well-known depressant activity on the central nervous system.

J.; De Lima, TCM; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC); Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Cecropia glazioui Sneth has been used in most Latin American countries as an antihypertensive, cardiotonic, and antiasthmatic folk medicine. in the cardiovascular studies to define its antihypertensive action it was noteworthy that animals treated with the aqueous extract (AE) of C. glazioui were much calmer than control animals. That observation prompted the present study, aimed at an investigation of the effects of AE and of two semipurified fractions on mouse behavior as evaluated in the elevated plus-maze test (EPM). Male adult Swiss mice were treated with AE (0.25-1 g/kg po) acutely (1 h) or repeatedly (24, 7, and 1.5 h before the test). After repeated administration of AE, the frequency of entries in the open arms of EPM was increased threefold. A similar profile of action was observed after treatment with the butanolic fraction (Fbut) but not with the aqueous fraction (Faq). These findings suggest that the AE of C. glazioui promotes an anxiolytic-like effect in mice. the active principles responsible for this action are present in the less polar fraction of the extract, the main constituents of which are flavonoids and terpenes, among other compounds. H.; Frussa, R.; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Studies have suggested that opioid antagonists potentiate the anxiolytic effect but not the amnestic action of chlordiazepoxide (CDZ). We investigated the effects of naltrexone (NAL) on the anxiolytic and amnestic effects of CDZ in mice tested in the plus-maze discriminative avoidance task (DAT). Mice are conditioned to choose between two enclosed arms (one of which aversive) while avoiding the two open arms of the apparatus. This task measures memory (time spent in the aversive vs. time in the non-aversive enclosed arms) and anxiety (time spent in the open arms). Mice treated with saline (SAL) or 5 mg/kg NAL, and SAL or 2.5 mg/kg CDZ were submitted to DAT training. the test was performed 24 h later, without aversive stimuli. in the training, NAL + CDZ group showed higher percent time spent in the open arms than all the other groups. in the test, NAL + CDZ (but not SAL + CDZ) group showed higher percent time spent in the aversive enclosed arm than SAL + SAL and NAL + SAL groups. the data suggest that NAL potentiates the small decreases in anxiety and retention induced by a subeffective dose of CDZ.
