The artistic legacy of this painter was rescued and claimed by Mário de Andrade at the first half of the XX century, through studies that have culminated in a complete biography, containing an inventory of art works. In his analysis, Mário de Andrade adopts a psychological model of interpretation, by crediting the characteristics of Jesuino?s work to a supposed conflictive personality caused by his condition as a black person. Based on that, the studies about this artist have received recent contributions, being possible to observe the continuity of Mario de Andrade?s perspective in the actual history of art and in the discourse of museological institutions as Museu Afro Brasil. This research intend to identify this continuity, by pointing its advances and limits, and proposing new perspectives of analysis that might be able to contribute to the construction of a renewed understanding of Priest Jesuíno?s work.
