The case of Iavelberg was selected because of the relatively high level of attention she received for being her relatively prominent representation in mainstream newspapers as the mistress of Carlos Lamarca, one of the dictatorship’s more notorious opponents. The main objective is to understand how the press constructed the image of the “female militant” during a time of intense conflict. The research concurs with other literature in demonstrating how being a woman contributed to extremely disparaging representations since, especially at that time, the conventions of morality and good manners demanded that woman stay within the private sphere – caring for children, husband and home –leaving the public sphere to men.
