Numerous devices support treatments and professional actions in this area. This study intends to analyze the implementation of a natural gas generator in the Surgery Center of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of The Federal University of São Paulo. Objective: To contribute to the logistics of continuous supply and security of the emergency energy system of Campus São Paulo/Unifesp in its essential activities of research and health care, with the study of the implementation of a natural gas generator in the DOCV building, where the Surgical Center is located, for greater autonomy of operation, reduction of pollutant emissions and public spending. Methods: Bibliographic research on building maintenance, engineering management, legislation pertaining of electrical installations and emergency power generation, generator technologies, natural gas, diesel, and the environment; Collection of documentary data in the Department of Infrastructure and Building Maintenance Division related to diesel generators and supplies of Campus São Paulo, triennium 2016-2018; On-site research in the DOCV building using energy analyzer and in generator and Comgás companies on equipment, supplies, standards, tariffs, consumption/hour ratios, costs, and maintenance, aiming to exchange diesel system for natural gas; Comparative studies of technologies and costs: equipment, facilities, maintenance and consumption presenting charts, tables and graphs. Results: The maintenance of the DOCV generator showed a low rate of occurrences in the triennium, despite the depreciation for the time of use greater than 10 years. Data from the supply of diesel generators on Campus indicates higher demand in the spring and summer for frequent interruptions of electricity with increased consumption and storms in the Region of Vila Clementino. The current location near to the paving is convenient for the installation of the meter because the shorter distance of the pipe that connects it to the building would be strategic for supply and eventual exchange to a gas system.xxiii The economic comparison of the two systems (equipment, infrastructure, fuel consumption, and annual maintenance) demonstrates the gas costs 61.53% higher than the diesel system. Conclusion: The research generated important data on risks of diesel shortages at times of the year, the vulnerability of contracting logistics for supply, maintenance, service life ratio and performance of the current generator and signals the possibility of implementing the gas system in DOCV, due to gains with continuous supply, better technological and environmental performance and other safety factors, in the positive perspective of systematic replacement of the system on Campus, even if it has a higher initial cost.
