Scientific publications have a global impact on the international scientific community as they share vital information that can be applied by physicians worldwide to solve their everyday medical problems. The historical background of scientific publication in journals in Japan on the subject of spine is unclear. Methods: We performed a literature search for publications by Japanese spine surgeons regarding spine or spinal cord topics using an online database: Pubmed.gov (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/). The results were stored and analyzed at the Laboratory of Clinical Studies and Basic Models of Spinal Disorders of the University of Caxias do Sul. Results were limited to articles published from January 2000 to December 2013. The search terms used were "Japan" AND ("spine" OR "spinal diseases" OR "spinal cord" OR "spinal cord diseases" OR "vertebroplasty" OR "arthrodesis" OR "discectomy" OR "foraminotomy" OR "laminectomy" OR "denervation" OR "back injuries"). Japanese spine surgeons were defined as spine surgeons from orthopedic or neurosurgical specialties where the publication was affiliated with Japanese services. Results:. A total of 16,140 articles were identified by the Medline search. Most of the articles were excluded based on information provided in the title and abstract as they were not related to spine surgery. This study comprised 1768 articles published in the Medline database by Japanese spine surgeons from 2000 to 2013. The number of publications rose in a linear fashion, with the number of papers published increasing by 5.4 per year (p = 0.038). In recent years the publications were increasingly performed in conjunction with the neurosurgery and orthopedics specialties. Conclusions: This study showed a clear increase in publications (on Medline) by Japanese spine surgeons over the last 14 years. While this is a positive development, there is also cause for concern as there is some evidence that the number of young scientists is declining in Japan. Special attention to educating researchers and improving resources for research is crucial to further increase the number and quality of Japanese publications. - ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Anestesia neuroaxial comparada à anestesia geral para procedimentos na metade inferior do corpo: revisão sistemática de revisões sistemáticas(Sociedade Brasileira de Anestesiologia, 2012-04-01) Barbosa, Fabiano Timbó; Castro, Aldemar Araujo [UNIFESP]; Miranda, Cláudio Torres de [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de Alagoas; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Universidade Estadual de Ciências da Saúde de AlagoasBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Systematic reviews organize literature data by combining results from published studies in order to resolve conflicts in the area of medical knowledge describing the interventions. The inadequate reporting of systematic reviews can damage the credibility and interfere in the results' quality. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of good quality systematic reviews comparing neuraxial anesthesia with general anesthesia for procedures on the lower half of the body. METHODS: Systematic review of systematic reviews. Primary variable: The frequency of good quality systematic reviews. The information was analyzed from the following databases: LILACS (January 1982 to December 2010); PubMed (January 1950 to December 2010); The Cochrane Database of Systematic Review and Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (volume 10, 2010); and SciELO (December 2010). The quality of systematic reviews was determined by the Overview Quality Assessment Questionnaire. The sample size calculation showed that it was necessary to analyze eight systematic reviews, taking into account that the frequency of good quality systematic reviews was 5%, an absolute precision of 15%, and a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Were identified 1,995 articles. The selection process eliminated 1,968 articles. Twenty-seven articles of systematic reviews were read in full, 9 were excluded due to incompatibility with the inclusion criteria, and 8 were duplicate publications. Ten systematic reviews were assessed for their quality. The frequency of good quality systematic reviews was 40% (4/10; 95% CI 9.6 to 70.4%). CONCLUSION: The frequency of good quality systematic reviews was 40%.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Designs of studies published in two Brazilian journals of orthopedics and sports medicine, recently indexed in the ISI Web of Science(Associação Paulista de Medicina - APM, 2009-11-01) Riera, Rachel [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The methodology and relevance of articles are among the keystones for promoting their citation and increasing journals' impact factors. Study designs appropriate for answering the questions and adequate sample sizes have the aim of reducing the risk of bias. This study evaluated the articles published in two Brazilian journals of orthopedics and sports medicine that were recently indexed in the ISI Web of Science, regarding study design, sample size calculation, randomization and blinding. DESIGN AND SETTING: Descriptive study at Brazilian Cochrane Center. METHODS: Through a manual search, all original manuscripts published in 2007 in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira and Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte were selected and evaluated. RESULTS: All the 60 articles published in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira and the 87 articles in Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte were included and evaluated. The commonest design in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira was experimental studies (n = 19) and in Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte, update or review articles (n =14). Sample calculations were seen in a minority of the articles. None of the eight clinical trials published presented sample calculations or adequate randomization processes. Three were described as blinded, but none described the measures taken to prevent disclosure of the allocation concealment. CONCLUSIONS: Publication of studies of good methodological quality other than review and experimental studies should be strongly encouraged among Brazilian journals, with the aim of increasing their citation and therefore their impact factor.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Índice de publicação dos trabalhos apresentados no XXIV Congresso Brasileiro de Cirurgia(Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões, 2003-10-01) Fernandes, Fernando Augusto Mardiros Herbella [UNIFESP]; Ventura, Denise Estefan [UNIFESP]; Del Grande, José Carlos [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)BACKGROUND: Analysis of the index of publication of the papers presented at the XXIV Brazilian Congress of Surgery. METHODS: Searches in a computerized database (Index Medicus-Medline-PubMed) of the papers presented at the Congress were done based on the names of authors and title's key words. RESULTS: Of the 1133 papers presented at the Congress, 29 (2.6%) were published-nine free papers (2.0%); one video (1.6%); two research forums (12.5%); and 17 posters (2.8%). Concerning authors, 2638 were identified and 71 (2.7%) had their papers published. CONCLUSIONS: The index of publication of the papers presented at the Brazilian Congress of Surgery is still low.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Mental health and psychiatry research in Brazil: scientific production from 1999 to 2003(Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo, 2006-08-01) Razzouk, Denise [UNIFESP]; Zorzetto, Ricardo [UNIFESP]; Dubugras, Maria Thereza Bonilha [UNIFESP]; Gerolin, Jerônimo [UNIFESP]; Mari, Jair de Jesus [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent of mental health scientific production in Brazil from 1999 to 2003, and to identify the nature of the publications generated, their sources of finance and the ways of publicly disseminating the research findings. METHODS: Searches for publications were conducted in the Medline and PsychInfo databases for the period 1999-2003. A semi-structured questionnaire developed by an international team was applied to 626 mental health researchers, covering each interviewee's educational background, research experience, access to funding sources, public impact and research priorities. The sample was composed by 626 mental health researchers identified from 792 publications indexed on Medline and PsychInfo databases for the period above, and from a list of reviewers of Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria. RESULTS: In Brazil, 792 publications were produced by 525 authors between 1999 and 2003 (441 indexed in Medline and 398 in the ISI database). The main topics were: depression (29.1%), substance misuse (14.6%), psychoses (10%), childhood disorders (7%) and dementia (6.7%). Among the 626 Brazilian mental health researchers, 329 answered the questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS: There were steadily increasing numbers of Brazilian articles on mental health published in foreign journals from 1999 to 2003: the number of articles in Medline tripled and it doubled in the ISI database. The content of these articles corresponded to the priorities within mental health, but there is a need for better interlinking between researchers and mental health policymakers.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Methodological adequacy of articles published in two open-access Brazilian cardiology periodicals(Associacao Paulista Medicina, 2010-03-04) Macedo, Cristiane Rufino [UNIFESP]; Silva, Davi Leite da; Puga, Maria Eduarda dos Santos [UNIFESP]; Ctr Cochrane Brasil; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The use of rigorous scientific methods has contributed towards developing scientific articles of excellent methodological quality. This has made it possible to promote their citation and increase the impact factor. Brazilian periodicals have had to adapt to certain quality standards demanded by these indexing organizations, such as the content and the number of original articles published in each issue. This study aimed to evaluate the methodological adequacy of two Brazilian periodicals within the field of cardiology that are indexed in several databases and freely accessible through the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and which are now indexed by the Web of Science (Institute for Scientific Information, ISI).DESIGN AND SETTING: Descriptive study at Brazilian Cochrane Center.METHODS: All the published articles were evaluated according to merit assessment (content) and form assessment (performance).RESULTS: Ninety-six percent of the articles analyzed presented study designs that were adequate for answering the objectives.CONCLUSIONS: These two Brazilian periodicals within the field of cardiology published methodologically adequate articles, since they followed the quality standards. Thus, these periodicals can be considered both for consultation and as vehicles for publishing future articles. For further analyses, it is essential to apply other indicators of scientific activity such as bibliometrics, which evaluates quantitative aspects of the production. dissemination and use of information, and scientometrics, which is also concerned with the development of science policies, within which it is often superimposed on bibliometrics.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Quality of diet plans for weight loss featured in women's magazines. A cross-sectional descriptive study(Associacao Paulista Medicina, 2017) Martinighi, Maiara [UNIFESP]; Koga da Silva, Edina Mariko [UNIFESP]CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Brazil has the fifth largest population of obese individuals in the world. Women's magazines publish a large number of diet plans, and therefore the objective of this study was to assess the quality of these plans. DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study. METHODS: We included the Brazilian women's magazines of highest circulation published between January and June 2014 that advertised diets for weight loss on their covers. We extracted the quantities of macro and micronutrients from each of these diet plans and compared these quantities with the World Health Organization nutritional guidelines for adult women. We also checked the total energy quantities of these plans, and any recommendations about water intake and physical activity. RESULTS: We identified 136 potentially eligible magazine issues
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Weight loss diets advertised in non-scientific publications(Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública Sergio Arouca, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, 2004-10-01) Amancio, Olga Maria Silverio [UNIFESP]; Chaud, Daniela Maria Alves [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Weight-loss diets advertised in mainstream non-scientific publications and targeting the adult female public were evaluated in relation to total energy value, macronutrients, calcium, iron, vitamins A and E, and cholesterol content, as well as the presence of information regarding the duration of diets, fluid intake, physical activity, and maintenance diets. Two publications were selected, considering periodicity, circulation, readership, and years in publication. The Virtual Nutri software was used to evaluate the nutrients of 112 diets. Micronutrient content was compared to the Dietary Reference Intakes. All diets were inadequate in at least one of the evaluated items. Less than 25.0% of the diets presented adequate macronutrient distribution. Calcium, iron, and vitamin E were also predominantly inadequate (85.7, 97.3, and 91.9%, respectively). Non-scientific publications should not be allowed to advertise weight-loss diets. In addition, their chemical composition is inadequate and they are not accompanied by important instructions for such therapy.
