These paintings represent scenes from the Old Testament and were exhibited in 1884 at the 26th General Exhibition organized by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. The paintings were analyzed in their formal and thematic conceptions, emphasizing the distinction between historical painting and religious painting, the modifications in these representations occasioned by orientalism during the nineteenth century, and the permeability between the genre of historical painting and the “minor genres”. Attempts were made to understand the place of these paintings in the work of Pedro Américo and its relationship with the paintings of other artists of the same period, both national and international, interpreting them in the artistic context in which they were made and analyzing their critical fortune.
