From mid 1990’s, the young segment of the oriental community of São Paulo embraced that activity, giving it a new meaning in its own terms. In the face of these events, I sought to investigate howyoungsters of so distinct origins in time and space interact with the same cultural practice, in particular manners, observing their respective idiosyncrasies. This research analyzes breakdance from the symbolic point of view, as an element of substantial relevance in the social life of São Paulo’s asian youth. The study sought to identify the reasons (symbolic meanings) and the manner (process of cultural globalization) which allowed this dance to consolidate itself in the “colony” in the way that is observed today. The analyses about the meanings of breakdance in the studied segment was performed through an ethnographic research about the so called “oriental colony”, investigating its sociological traits originated from its specific cultural formation. Regard the process that allows the incoming of the dance to the national context, we may observe how this artistic diffusion is performed as an element of a globalized culture, pertinent to a scenery characteristic of modernity.
