Despite the metaphysical content of the interrogations, The Seventh Seal attests the inaccessibility of metaphysical answers, for many scholars, becoming a contradictory argument: nor Christian, nor atheist. I intent to clarify this apparent hermeneutic contradiction in two ways: by understanding as Christians the interrogations and as atheists the answers. Firstly, to investigate the interrogations, I’ll focus on Bergman’s childhood, surrounded by a rigorous Lutheran education, imposed by his father, a renowned minister. Secondly, to investigate the answers, I’ll focus on the increasing rationality of a man who refuses any metaphysical knowledge that presupposes God’s existence.
