    The work entitled The dark ages through the lantern's light: Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1956) discourses about the existential argument proposed by Ernst Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) in The Seventh Seal (1956), understood by many scholars as the most ambitious bergmanesque metaphysical interrogation. Despite the metaphysical content of the interrogations, The Seventh Seal attests the inaccessibility of metaphysical answers, for many scholars, becoming a contradictory argument: nor Christian, nor atheist. I intent to clarify this apparent hermeneutic contradiction in two ways: by understanding as Christians the interrogations and as atheists the answers. Firstly, to investigate the interrogations, I’ll focus on Bergman’s childhood, surrounded by a rigorous Lutheran education, imposed by his father, a renowned minister. Secondly, to investigate the answers, I’ll focus on the increasing rationality of a man who refuses any metaphysical knowledge that presupposes God’s existence.
