It is a central nervous system stimulant that increases alertness and reduces impulsiveness and hyperactivity in patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). According to Ortega et al. (2010) worldwide, methylphenidate is a stimulant that has larger consumer demand compared to the sum of all other stimulants. Its connection to ADHD has been a determinant justification for such growth. The medicalization of childhood and the medicalization in life, according to the literature, are inserted in the contemporary context of the bio-identities constitution and the physicalist view of mental distress. The present study aimed to analyze the demand of the drug methylphenidate in children from 6 to 10 years old within 2008 and 2012, in child health unit of the public health network in Santos, to clarify how this medication was used and its relation with the ADHD treatment. It was a case study of a quantitative-qualitative approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with professionals in Centro de Valorização da Criança da Região Central Histórica (psychologist, speech therapist, therapeutic companion, social worker and psychiatrist) consulting medical records of this unit. The interviews were analyzed using content analysis, that is, the thematic technique. According to this method, parts of the interviews were selected as stated in the categories derived from the interview script. It was allowed through these parts to identify core meaning which consequently enabled the elaboration of general themes, being launched on a systematic framework. The quantitative data obtained from the medical records were organized into a table and subjected to statistical analysis. The results showed critical professionals about the diagnosis of ADHD and its pharmacological treatment with reduction in the use of Ritalin, however with a tendency to substitute it for another drug, Risperidone. It was hypothetically suggested that we live in a hubris time in which adjustment efforts occur.
