Recognizing similarities in the dictatorship experiences of Brazil and Argentina creates an opportunity to comparatively analyze the procedures and practices each country adopted to establish “places” to ensure the repressive aspects of these regimes would not be forgotten. Two sites were selected to focus the analysis: the Memorial of the Resistance in São Paulo, Brazil, and the Provincial Memory Archive in Córdoba, Argentina. Oriented by preservationist theories of heritage and restoration, and alert to the ways in which these approaches can serve as mechanisms for overcoming the legacy of dictatorships, the study seeks historical understanding of the processes involved in determining the final form these memorials. These “memory locations” are considered to be places of great social relevance, which physically express a the historical processes that shaped them. While mere structures, these buildings must be recognized as an inexorable part of history, not only of the dictatorships that used them to torture and murder political enemies but also as places where the new democratic governments were challenged to judge their relationship to the past. Differences in the nature of the authoritarian regimes of Argentina and influenced the nature of subsequent transitions and consequently the actions related to the retoration and preservation of memories. A fundamental distinction revealed links the degree of dictatorial continuity – the regime’s level of control over its own rule, over the democratic transition and even the new civilian government - to the degree of condemnation represented in the selected places of memory. The relationship between authoritarianism and legality also indicates the contours of subsequent democracies and help demonstrate how preservation procedures were intrinsically linked to historical conditions in each context. These locations then appear as privileged points of reference for considering not only memory but that the degree of truth and justice the new democracies would enjoy.
