The study is a case-control study. The experimental group consisted of 38 people living in this area and 38 people in the control group, matched for age, sex, absence of disease, and non-smokers. All participants were further divided into two subgroups: adults (n = 18) aged 18-48 years; and children (n = 20) from 7 months to 15 years. Samples of buccal mucosa were collected to perform the micronucleus test. In the adults, peripheral blood samples were also collected for the comet assay. There was a significant difference in the frequency of micronuclei, and an increase in genotoxicity indicating that the inhabitants of the region are in contact with substances that affect genetic stability. In the infantile group, this frequency was higher, which is related to the unique vulnerability pattern of this group in relation to adults when they are exposed to several contaminants. There was no significant difference in relation to cytotoxicity for all groups and subgroups evaluated. In short, the results demonstrate that pollution associated with vulnerability conditions can generate genomic instability in humans.
