The importance of steel in the automotive industry is undeniable and it lasts as the most widely used material in vehicle platform. The main requirements are cost, safety, fuel efficiency, light weighting. Weight reduction is mandatory for reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gases from the transportation sector. In 1970 a new class of lightweight and high-strength steel was developed. Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS), such as Dual Phase (DP) steel have been used in vehicle bodies. Also, giving focus on new design, fabrication time, reproducibility and assembly techniques for automotive production, Laser Beam Welding – LBW is successfully applied because its high process speed, the possibility to weld joints better, and conformation of tailored blanks after welding. The current work purposes the optimal conditions for the weldability of Dual Phase DP600 steel by the laser welding process without filler metal (autogenous). The objective is to characterize the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded bead. The welding process was performed by a laser beam from Yb:Fiber equipment, (IPG, YLR-2.000). The best condition was achieved setting power at 1.500 W and welding speed at 50 mm/s, bringing a heat input of 30 J/mm. Argon was used as shielding gas. The fusion zone (FZ), and in the heat affected zone (HAZ) were characterized. The tensile strength and Vickers hardness tests were performed in order to determine the mechanical behavior. The microstructural analyses were studied by micro X-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopies. Chemical homogeneity was verified by X-ray micro-fluorescence. The results show high quality, chemically and structurally homogeneous weld (1500W , 50mm/s) with improved mechanical properties for the application, in order to other kind of welding that need after work.
