Consequently, the environmental movement has grown and consolidated, pressing for public policies and a daily behavior more aware of these issues. The brazilian environmentalism has passed through several changes motivated by political opportunity structures, a notion developed by Sidney Tarrow to explain how the different political contexts encourage the collective action. Based on this theory, the present study will examine two important political opportunity structures to the brazilian environmental movement: the UN environmental conferences known as Rio-92 and Rio +10. This study will expose the negotiations and decisions of these meetings, the participation of environmentalists and the influence of these events on the course of the movement.
