One of the main points examined are the 1968 and 1969 manifestations of his changed relationship to the pacifist political line gradually adopted by the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) since 1956. It argues that PCB pacifivism directly influenced the perspectives of struggle advocated by Carlos Marighella. After a few years of struggle with himself and the leadership, Marighella went on to become one of the leading advocates and leaders of armed struggle and urban guerrilla action. Marighella defended these tactics as the main means of conftonting the military-civilian dictatorship that tookover control of Brazil following a coup d’eta in April 1964 and remained in power until 1985. In addition to an extensive bibliography, the main primary sources used for this work were the “Pronouncement of the communist grouping of São Paulo,” dated February 1968, the Minimanual of the urban guerrilla, dated June 1969, and the document entitled “Perspectives on the Brazilian Revolution,” dated September 1969.
